Religious Studies

The Nairobi Jaffery Academy has the teaching of Islamic Religious Education (IRE) as part of its curriculum. The subject is compulsory for all the Muslim students from the KG level up to grade eleven. We have an internally moderated syllabus for the KG level to grade 9. From grade 10 to grade 11 we follow the Edexcel GCSE Religious Studies Syllabus and all the students must appear for the end of course Examination.

The academy has also introduced the GCE Religious Studies as an option for A Levels starting from the 2010/2011 academic year. We already have some students in A level who will be sitting their Advanced Subsidiary Examination in the May/June 2011 session. Religious studies as an academic subject can open up avenues for career advancement in law, teaching, journalism, social work and international relations among other professions.

The department also encourages and cultivates Islamic culture and religious atmosphere in the academy. The students are encouraged to utilize the mosque for their prayers whenever they are on campus. There is the annual Holy month of Ramadhan Activities in which students compete in the memorization and recitation of the Holy Qur’an. The Miladun Nabi is celebrated every year during the month of Rabiul Awwal whenever the school is in session. The two events are part of the annual school calendar.

The teaching of Arabic is also part of the IRE curriculum. Arabic being the language of the Holy Qur’an makes the students understand and appreciate the Holy Qur’an. It is taught from the KG and also as an optional examinable foreign language using the Cambridge (CIE) syllabus for grade 10 and 11. The Arabic teacher is Br.Hassan Juma Werwe.

There are four teachers in the IRE department:

  • Sis. Saumu Bakari
  • Sis. Fauzia Taki,
  • Omar Mwamtunza
  • Suleiman
